The online Master of Professional Science (MPS) in Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI) is an interdisciplinary, non-thesis degree program that combines the strengths of several academic units at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our faculty are experts in information and computer science, public health, biostatistics, medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy.

Offered by the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP), the online health informatics master’s program also has strong ties to IT and biotech companies in the NC Research Triangle Park, which offers many opportunities to gain hands-on experiences in analytics, machine learning and software development.

Master’s in Health Informatics Online Curriculum

The 35-credit BMHI curriculum is designed to develop your data and health sciences education alongside your leadership and management skills.

As a student, you will be required to complete an individualized, mentored internship that serves as a bridge between your academic training and real-world practice. Internship opportunities should be at least 400 hours and involve work that is of value to the organization.

Learning Outcomes

The online health informatics degree program will prepare you to:

  • Manage large scale projects related to clinical and public health information systems.
  • Develop and evaluate health information systems that impact clinical decision making and health care quality.
  • Analyze and manage health data for improvement in clinical practice, biomedical research and public health services.

The program offers tracks in clinical informatics and public health informatics.

Applications to the Master of Professional Science in Biomedical and Health Informatics are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Admissions Highlights:

  • Required: bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Requiring only 35 credits, the MPS in BMHI provides a catalyst for your health informatics career. You can choose from three different tracks to complete the degree:

  • Fast track: 1 year
  • Standard track: 1.5 years
  • Part-time track: 2–4 years

The MPS in BMHI is also available as a residential program.
